The Gangneung Danoje Festival celebrates Korea’s traditional holiday Dano, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.

The festival was designated as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005 and has been Korea's Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 13 since 1967. The festival preserves Joseon folk traditions.

Many of the traditional rituals and dances connect people with the ancient sprits. There are traditional wrestling matches, traditional wedding ceremonies, traditional mask dances, traditional music concerts, traditional dance competitions, traditional puppet shows and much, much more that all take place during Dano and that all connect people with their past.

Visitors are invited to participate in various activities, too, such as making rice cake, washing their hair in iris-infused water, making paper fans, decorating masks and sampling some of the delicious traditional alcoholic beverages.
